HCMC’s pedestrian street gets free Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is now available on the pedestrian-only Nguyen Hue Street in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, news website VnExpress reported.

The service, which has up to 1-gigabit speed, will blanket the whole street around-the-clock, the report quoted the provider Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) as saying.

VNPT said it is still working to improve the coverage.

Local authorities are also preparing to install 160 wooden benches along the street. The benches were made from timber of large, century-old trees in front of the Saigon Opera House, which were felled last July to make room for the city’s first subway station.

The US$19.7 million Nguyen Hue pedestrian street has become a new tourist attraction in HCMC downtown since it opened to the public on April 29.

Last Sunday, the city inaugurated a new statue of President Ho Chi Minh on the street to celebrate his 125th birthday.
